In the summer of 1964, Andy Warhol spotted a photograph of hibiscus flowers in the pages of Modern Photography magazine — taken by photographer Patricia Caulfield. He appropriated the image, transforming it through his signature silkscreen process into one of the most iconic series of his career. The Flowers were first exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York in November 1964, where all 22 paintings sold out on opening night.
